The Microsoft Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000 is a very simple mobile bluetooth mouse that works on both Windows and Mac. It has been around for quite a while, but we decided to review it in our quest to find the perfect Bluetooth mouse for your notebook computer. Sadly, this entry falls short due to problems with comfort and accuracy.HP Compaq 365750-003
The Microsoft Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000 is a small mouse designed to not take up too much room in a computer bag. It is small enough that you could just carry it in your pocket if you keep your notebook in a sleeve instead of a computer bag. Unfortunately, because of the size, it is not the most comfortable or accurate mouse to use.HP Compaq 365750-004
The two top buttons are shaped so that your fingers rest nicely on them. HP Compaq 367457-001However, the length of the mouse from the front to the back means that you cannot really rest your hand on the mouse while using it unless you have very small hands. I found myself having to grip the mouse between my thumb and ring finger to move it around. This is fine for short mousing stints. After more than fifteen to twenty minutes I found myself subconsciously using the trackpad on my MacBook Pro or MacBook Air instead of reaching for the mouse.HP Compaq 372772-001
The weight of the mouse is also a problem.HP Compaq 382553-001 For precision mousing a heavy mouse makes it hard to move to just the right spot. A light mouse makes it too easy to accidentally mouse past the button you want to click or the edge of the window you want to drag. This mouse is just too light. You can fix this by adjusting the speed of the cursor in the settings of the computer, but that slows things down too much the rest of the time. I like my cursor to dart across the screen. A properly weighted mouse makes this possible while still hitting the target.HP Compaq 383220-001
This mouse has the basic right and left click buttons, but there is also a side button the left side that your thumb can hit. It is a back button for use in a browser or in Windows it goes back in your Windows Explorer history. This function is unavailable in Mac OS X Finder windows. The button is also easy to accidentally click while mousing.HP Compaq 385843-001
Because there is only one side button, it would be a little awkward for left-handed users. Ultimately the mouse would be better if there was a button on both sides. The scroll wheel works well and is not too stiff or loose. We prefer a smooth scrolling wheel, but for a clicking scroll wheel it is not bad. The wheel can also serve as another button. The problem is, without a supported software driver it cannot be configured. On a Mac there is no special driver. The Microsoft web site has a link to a special Mac driver but the link leads to a Japanese language site with a “not found” 404 error page.HP Compaq 385895-001
The Windows software is adequate and can be used to configure the buttons. We turned off the thumb button and made the scroll wheel also behave as a double click button. You cannot do this on Mac.The mouse has an indicator light which will glow red when the batteries are drained. It will flash green and red when the mouse is ready to be paired with your Bluetooth enabled computer. It turns off when it is connected.HP Compaq 393549-001
If you don’t have Bluetooth on your computer, then you will have to either buy a USB Bluetooth dongle or find a different mouse. Microsoft doesn’t provide a USB dongle with this mouse. If your 64GB 11.6″ MacBook Air is filling up with your content and software, OWC has a solution. They have released an upgrade path for both the 11.6″ and 13.3″ 2010 MacBook Air ultraportables.HP Compaq 393652-001
These computers come with fast SSDs instead of hard drives.HP Compaq 395790-001 That is what gives you your system’s speed. The drives also limit your storage capacity because solid state storage is much more expensive per gigabyte than traditional optical spinning hard drives. For a pretty penny you can crack open the MacBook Air and upgrade that SSD to one of a higher capacity thanks to OWC and their new SSD upgrades. Just one warning. This likely will void your warranty with Apple, but they also likely won’t notice if you have to return it and put back the stock SSD. The Mercury Extreme Pro SSDs come in capacities of either 240GB or 480GB. We tested and will demonstrate the upgrade to the 480GB model.HP Compaq 395790-003
We upgraded a 13.3″ MacBook Air that came with a 256GB SSD to 480GB thanks to the OWC 480GB Mercury Aura Pro Express Solid State Drive. One might wonder why anyone would bother to open their computer and upgrade. The first reason is as we said above – space. Many MacBook Airs only came with 64GB of storage. Others have 128GB or 256GB of storage, but even that 256GB can get cramped quickly.HP Compaq 395790-132
Another reason to perform this upgrade is to avoid carrying around an external drive. We’ve been carrying around a slow 500GB WD external USB drive. It is a little annoying to keep up with another drive. Of course that drive did only cost us $100, but it is slow.HP Compaq 395790-163
Speed is the third reason to upgrade. The OWC drive is much faster than any external drive, even if it is an SSD or a large capacity flash memory stick. It also offers a bump over the stock Apple SSD, although we were surprised to find that the speed increase was not as drastic as we hoped.HP Compaq 395791-001
Finally, the upgrade will conserve battery life since the user will not have to plug an external USB drive into their MacBook Air. USB ports suck power draining the battery faster.Installation is simple. The OWC drive comes with the two tools you will need to perform the upgrade. First, backup your system using an external drive and Time Machine. This not only preserves your data in case something goes wrong, but it also makes restoring the system after the upgrade much faster.HP Compaq 395791-002
I like to put a piece of tape sticky side up on my work surface to hold the loose screws. Once the screws are out, the bottom plate will pop off.Now take the Torx screw driver that came with the drive and unscrew the tiny black screw that keeps the old Apple SSD in place. After the screw is removed and placed on the tape, just carefully pull the drive up from the end where the screw was holding it in place.HP Compaq 395791-003
Discharge any static electricity by touch the chassis of the computer. Then pull the drive out. It may take a little wiggling, but don’t wiggle too much or you may bend or break something.Once the old drive is out, place it in a safe spot. Take the new OWC drive out of the package being careful to discharge any static electricity before touching the drive.HP Compaq 395791-132
Carefully insert the drive in the slot where the old drive was. We found that it was a much tighter fit than the stock Apple SSD. You may have to push a little to get it into the slot. Also be careful not to try to put it in upside down. Fortunately it is keyed and will only fit one way. Once it is in place, be sure the screw hole lines up. On ours it was not perfect but close enough to get the screw in and the drive worked fine.HP Compaq 395791-142
Now replace the Torx screw that was removed and also replace the bottom plate and all the screws that were removed. At this point you will be ready to start it up and install Mac OS X. Hit the power button and hold down the Option key until you see the boot options for hard drive or USB drive. Click the USB drive and the arrow below it to boot using the OS X installation disk.HP Compaq 395791-251
Now you have two choices. You can install the OS and reinstall your software and put your files back into place from a backup. A faster way is to just use Time Machine to restore the previous backup. The benefit of the second option is a faster upgrade. The benefit of the first option is that it is good to start from scratch about once a year to clean out clutter and old files that are no longer wanted or needed. We did the second option because it was faster.HP Compaq 395791-261
After selecting your language in the OS X install program, from the menu find the Disk Utility and erase the OWC drive. Then from the same menu choose Restore System From Backup …. Choose the most recent back up and restore it to the new disk and shut down. Reboot and it should load OS X from the new OWC drive.HP Compaq 395791-661

The Dell Latitude E5420 is a solidly built business notebook with an incredibly strong hinge and a latch that keeps the notebook closed. The magnesium internal case and tri-metal top do a good job of preventing scratches and providing a sturdy case for the notebook. the display case is one of the most rigid we have seen on a business notebook and the total package provides a good deal of strength, even to the center of the keyboard.HP Compaq 398680-001
