The simplest answer is to purchase an external solution which can be connected with USB 2.0 to just about any computer, whether it is a desktop or laptop running on Windows, Linux or MacOs. The easiest solution would be to buy a complete external drive off the shelf from any well stocked electronics store. AA-PB9NC6W-E
We tested the external Blu-Ray drive from Buffalo for example. Those who would like to continue using the drives found in their old laptops, want to replace the optical drive in their laptop with a second hard drive (on selected models), or wish to chose their own optical drive, will have to chose an external housing into which this can be mounted.AA-PB9NS6B
These are available from a wide range of suppliers, with varying features and prices. There are also models available with the now outdated IDE interface, which is interesting for those who want to give their old hardware a second chance. P210 Battery
For our test we chose a model from Firstcom with a SATA interface, which is available from about 12.- Euro. The matt black finish (also available in other colors), gives it a very conservative and minimalistic appearance. Unfortunately, this level of minimalism also does not include a front panel which would provide the appropriate cover at the front. P210-BA01 Battery,
... doesn't look good, but has no effect on the functionalityThe upper and lower parts can be separated to reveal a simple circuit board with a SATA port, USB 2.0 and a socket for an additional power supply. If more power is needed, it can be delivered through the USB and/or the additional socket that is (USB cable is included, the power supply isn’t). P210-BA02 Battery
Some units require more than 1000 mA,P210-BS01 Battery which is well above what a regular USB 2.0 (500 mA), can provide. Even with a second USB 2.0 connection supplying the power, one should not expect much more than 600 mA. As many manufacturers turn a blind eye to this restriction however, it is usually not a problem. USB 3.0 seems to be a bit more stringent however as we have found in our tests that not all 2.5" hard drives were willing to start up. P210-BS02 Battery
In order to install ones drive of choice, there isn’t much that needs to be done. Slide in the drive, secure it with screws at the back if necessary… and that’s it! We used the DVD drive from an HP Probook 6540b which, after installation, made this housing's lack of an appropriate front panel really obvious. P210-BS04 Battery
The front panel of the HP Probook doesn’t look right and sticks out quite a bit which doesn’t look good either. From a purely functional point of view however, there were no issues to speak of. The drive was recognized on all of our test units using MacOsX, Windows 7, Windows Vista and Ubuntu Linux 9. P210-BS05 Battery
When dismantling the unit one should separate the upper and lower half of the housing which is held together by plastic clips. The SATA port holds on to the internal device quite well which can only be pulled out with great force. P210-Pro P8400 Padou Battery
Firstcom offers a cheap and effective solution for those who want to use their drive of choice. The housing looks good, the installation is simple and the price is very fair. An additional power supply can be attached, however only the USB option is provided and an actual power supply is not. It also does not have a front panel which could improve the esthetic value of the housing significantly.P210-XA01 Battery
Plastic book. Many shortcomings and few genuine good points, is how we would sum up this cut-price laptop for €370. Before we can get too pleased about its excellent range of ports, our hands slip over the case’s glassy surface. Read on to find out more about this laptop and its AMD V series V120 processor.P408 Battery,
MSI CR630-V1225FD: Does this 15.6-inch laptop have anything more to offer than a good port layout?Cheap laptops are still selling extremely well. Particularly just before Christmas, when the chances are high that Dad or Grandma will send a Euro or two in the direction of their offspring, the season of cheap laptops is truly upon us. P410 Battery
As we have so far not been able to get our hands on the price-busting HP Compaq Presario CQ56-103SG (XH187EA), €299, we ordered this MSI CR630-V1225FD which has similar hardware (CPU and GPU).P46 Battery
A straightforward office companion for €370? It does without frills like a dedicated graphics card (IGP ATI HD 4270) or the extravagance of dual-core performance. With the AMD V120 (2.20 GHz), it offers classic singe-core performance, which is not necessarily a bad thing. The CR630 also keeps down the price by not coming with an operating system (Free DOS is installed). P460 Battery
Out of the colourful box comes a black 15.6-inch laptop covered in an understated pattern of stripes (cross-hatch design). Fingerprints quickly engulf it from top to bottom, something you should be aware of before you buy a glossy machine.P460-44G Battery
The lid does flex significantly in response to pressure and twisting forces, and the screen surface too. The hinges hold the lid securely in position but cannot completely prevent it from wobbling. The lid’s maximum opening angle is an unusually large 185 degrees. The hinges are firmly attached to the case, but you can see that their movements distort the chassis a little. P460-44P Battery
The smooth palm rest is the only area on the top of the base unit that is properly robust. The keyboard flexes a little across its entire length, making typing feel spongy. The base plate is essentially sound, but you should not press too hard on the plastic air vent or the optical drive - the surface can be pushed inwards quite noticeably in these places.P460-AA01 Battery
Back: USB, HDMI, eSATA,P460-AA02 Battery, VGAThe MSI CR630 delivers to your living room or desk all the ports you would expect from a good all-rounder. The right and left sides of the machine do not look promising at first, as they house only a USB port (right) and an Ethernet port, ExpressCard34 slot, card reader and audio ports (left). But in fact MSI has indulged in the old laptop tradition of putting the most commonly used ports on the back of the machine. The high position of the hinge mechanism, along with the battery which is stowed under the palm rest, make this unusual layout possible. P460-Pro P8600 Pompeji Battery
